Highlights
California’s residential electricity per capita usage of 2.3 megawatt-hours (MWh) was one of the lowest in the country in 2022, higher than only Hawaii (1.9 MWh). Among the 50 states, California has comfortably maintained its position of having the second-lowest per capita residential electricity consumption since 2006.
California’s year-over-year residential electricity consumption per capita fell by 0.6% from 2021 and 2022, while it increased by 2.4% in the rest of the U.S. On a 10-year basis from 2012 to 2022, California’s residential electricity consumption per capita fell by 3.4%, which is faster than every other state except for Maryland, where it fell by 5.9% during the same period.
