  • California’s energy consumption per capita (which includes electricity) was 176.3 million BTU. This was significantly lower than other large states. California’s per capita energy consumption was the fourth-lowest in the nation, after Rhode Island (170.6 million BTU), Massachusetts (172.3 million BTU) and New York (175.5 million BTU). California’s energy consumption per capita has fallen at a similar pace as electricity per capita, falling by 16.7 and 11.9% between 2008 and 2022, respectively.
  • Energy consumption per capita in California declined by 5.3% from 2012 to 2022 while it decreased by 2.6% in the rest of the U.S. during the same period. On the other hand, per-capita energy consumption rose by 1.4% from 2021 to 2022 in California—slightly more than in the rest of the U.S., where per-capita energy consumption rose 1.1%.
