Most of the utility-scale power plants that came online after 2014 have been solar (19.1 GW from 2014 to 2023), followed by natural gas (3.2 GW), and wind (1.5 GW). During the same period, the state retired 12.3 GW of utility-scale power plants. Most of the power plants retired had been aging natural gas power plants (10.9 GW), most of which began operations between the 1950s to the 1970s. California also retired 220 MW of coal power plants during the same period.
