Highlights
  • In addition to rated capacity, the SGIP also reports DERs by energy storage capacity. In 2023, California added 87.4 MWh of energy storage capacity across all DER sectors, with the residential sector adding 98.5% of the SGIP-eligible energy storage capacity. The SGIP-eligible storage capacity rebated in 2023 is the smallest since 2017 and represents a 36.3% decrease over capacity rebated in 2022 (137.4 MWh).
  • By equipment type, electrochemical storage technologies (such as lithium-ion battery storage) were the only type receiving rebating. Most (84.9 MWh or 97.1%) were paired with solar PV, with the rest being either paired with micro-turbine, pressure reduction turbine, another electrochemical storage technology, or as standalone DER systems.
