Highlights
  • The number of electric light-duty pickups, SUVs and vans registered in 2023 hit an all-time high of 654,405, up 71.3% compared to 2022. There has been a notable shift in customer demand within the ZEV market away from sedans and compact cars (cars) and towards pickup trucks and crossover-SUVs (pickups). In 2023, ZEV pickups made up 43% of light-duty ZEV registrations compared to 34% in 2022 and 26% in 2021. With the arrival of some highly-anticipated electric trucks in 2023 and over the coming years such as Tesla Cybertruck (released in November 2023),52 and Hyundai Ioniq 9 (formerly Hyundai Ioniq 7), electrification of this segment will continue to accelerate as more models come on the market.
  • Although electric medium- and heavy-duty vehicles (MHDVs) make up only a small sliver of all ZEV registration, registrations totaled 3,784 vehicles in 2023, an increase of 63% compared to the 2,320 registrations in 2022.
