Highlights
California is gradually making strides in energy efficiency gains. Total energy consumption peaked in 2007, coincidentally when GHG emissions also peaked. Total energy consumption is 14% lower in 2023 than in 2007 and 4% lower than in 1990.
Similarly, total electricity consumption peaked in 2008 and has been falling but less so than that of total energy consumption, indicating some progress toward electrification. Total electricity consumption is 11% lower in 2023 than in 2008 but 13% higher than in 1990.
Electric system energy losses, or energy lost along the way as electricity travels from a power plant to the end-users, have fallen significantly since 2008. Line losses were 48% lower and 36% lower in 2023 than in 2008 and 1990, respectively.
