Highlight
  • The share of renter-occupied households using electricity (40.6%) as the heating fuel source was about double that of owner-occupied households (20.9%) in 2023. However, these shares are slightly lower than in 2022 (41.0% for renter-occupied households and 21.3% for owner-occupied households) while the share of households using utility gas as the main heating fuel source increased slightly among both renter-occupied and owner-occupied households--perhaps a reflection of rising electricity bills. Utility gas remains the dominant heating fuel source in California, accounting for 69.0% of owner-occupied households and 50.3% of renter-occupied households in 2023, up slightly from 68.6% and 49.8% in 2022, respectively.
