Highlights
Of the large metro areas, Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim leads with a 116% growth in Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) from 2020 to 2025. On the other hand, the percentage increase of EVSE chargers in San Diego-Carlsbad (+35%), San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward (+39%), and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara (+45%) have been comparatively tepid. Notably, EVSE chargers are being deployed most rapidly in metro areas with below average ZEV adoption rates--El Centro (+198%), Santa Maria-Santa Barbara (+103%), and Chico (+101%).
The number of DC fast chargers grew 44% between December 2023 and February 2025 compared to Level 2 chargers, which grew 73% during the same period. Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim leads with slightly over a quarter of DC fast chargers (4,500) deployed followed by San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward with 2,400 DC fast chargers. The number of DC fast chargers are growing at similar rates in the large metro areas but faster in small to medium sized metro areas. Among them, the number of DC fast chargers tripled from 25 to 77 in El Centro between December 2023 and February 2025 and almost doubled from 138 to 253 in Santa Maria-Santa Barbara.
