Highlights
After years of trending downwards, the number of clean vehicle rebates claimed ballooned to over 90,000 rebates in 2023, surpassing the previous peak of 73,392 rebates claimed in 2018. Cumulatively, Californians have claimed 594,053 rebates as of 2023, almost doubled the cumulative total in 2018 (300,876 rebates).
The share of equity groups—people living in disadvantaged communities (as defined by CalEnviroScreen 3.0)53 and low-income communities (as defined by Assembly Bill 1550)54 —who have taken advantage of the rebate has been steadily increasing overtime. In 2023, approximately 34.1% of rebates came from either of these groups—the highest share on record—up from 32.2% in 2022, and almost twice as much as in 2015 (17.8%).
