Highlights
  • In California, ZEVs share of all registered vehicles continued to rise at a steady pace in 2024 across several Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs). However, the Bay Area still dominates. San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara leads with ZEVs being 11.8% of registered vehicles followed by San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward with 10.0%. Generally large MSAs have higher ZEV penetrations.
  • Some medium size MSAs have been experiencing significant growth: Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura (from 4.7% to 5.9%), Santa Cruz-Watsonville (from 4.8% to 5.8%), Napa (from 4.7% to 5.8%), Santa Rosa-Petaluma (from 4.6% to 5.6%), and Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade (from 4.1% to 5.3%). Moreover, the non-MSA area rate has surpassed three percent, reaching 3.1% in 2024. Statewide, ZEVs as percentage of total vehicles registered stood at 6.5% in 2024, and every MSA has finally surpassed the one percent threshold.
