In 2018, energy intensity (energy input relative to GDP output) decreased by 1.7 percent compared to 2017, with every sector recording a decrease. The transportation sector leads with a 2.6 percent drop, followed by a 1.7 percent decrease in the industrial sector.
Challenge
Although transportation had the largest year-over-year drop, it had the smallest drop in energy intensity (-9.4%) between 2013 to 2018 out of the four sectors. Indeed, total energy consumption in transportation increased 10.6 percent during the same period, almost double the next sector with the largest increase (commercial; +5.6%) due to more vehicle miles traveled and a shift in consumer preference toward larger vehicles.
