  • Homes occupied by owners where electricity or solar energy is the primary heating fuel have risen much faster (+24.8%) than all other fuels; homes powered by electricity grew 17.0 percent while homes powered by rooftop solar-type systems grew 1,602.4 percent. These households make up 19.7 percent of all owner-occupied households in California in 2019, up from 16.4 percent in 2008. Electricity or solar energy is also the fastest-increasing primary heating fuel among renter households, increasing by 25.3 percent between 2008 and 2019. Renter-occupied units (36.5%) are about twice as likely to be powered by electricity than owner-occupied units (18.4%).
