  • The number of ZEVs on the road reached 823,164 by the end of 2021, increasing by 25.3 percent compared to 2020, with electric cars and hydrogen-fueled vehicles as the fastest-growing segments on a percentage basis. In 2021, registrations of electric and hydrogen vehicles increased by 34.0 percent and 35.3 percent, respectively. Moreover, natural gas-powered vehicle registrations fell 23.2 percent in 2021. Over time, California has moved away from natural gas and toward electric, zero-emission vehicles. However, despite the significant increase of ZEV registrations captured in 2021, gasoline vehicles were 84.9 percent of new registrations. To ensure the replacement of fossil fuel-powered vehicles with new or used ZEVs, that share will need to decrease further.
