The number of ZEVs on-road in California reached 657,019 as of the end of 2020, an increase of 11.6 percent compared to 2019. The increase is significantly smaller than previous years’, which could be partially explained by the change in economic conditions due to the pandemic. Despite the pandemic decreasing the growth rate of ZEVs, new registrations of ZEVs declined less than new registrations of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). Despite a 5.9 percent drop in year-over-year total vehicle registrations, registrations of BEVs (+16.7%), PHEVs (+4.8%) and FCEVs (+12.2%) all increased from 2019 to 2020.
