- In California, ZEVs share of all registered vehicles increased faster in 2022 than in 2021, with a few medium-sized Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) experiencing significant growth; Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura (from 2.4% to 3.3%), Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade (from 2.1% to 2.9%), Napa (from 2.6% to 3.5%), Santa Rosa-Petaluma (from 2.7% to 3.4%), Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario (from 1.6% to 2.3%), Santa Cruz-Watsonville (from 3% to 3.7%). Moreover, the non-MSA area rate has steadily risen, increasing from 1.0 percent in 2020 to 1.1 percent in 2021 to 1.4 percent in 2022. An equitable statewide transition to 100 percent ZEVs will require increased investment in infrastructure for both urban and rural communities. For the first time, county-wide average ZEV adoption rate exceeded two percent—reaching 2.4 percent in 2022.
