California’s residential electricity per capita usage, 94,935 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) is significantly lower than other large states. Among the 50 states, California’s per household residential consumption (6.7 MWh/household) is the second-lowest after Hawaii (5.8 MWh/household). In addition, California’s residential per household consumption has fallen at a similar pace as electricity consumption per capita, declining 1.6 percent between 2010 and 2020. In fact, California’s residential per household consumption has decreased 1.6 percent between 2010 and 2020, yet the residential per household consumption has increased by 9.5 percent from 2019 to 2020. As a result of the global warming effect, California’s energy consumption is expected to shift from heating to cooling, and such growing demand creates challenges for new energy generation and encourages a higher level of load flexibility to manage peak demand.184
