Highlight
- Energy consumption per capita in 2021 remained notably below the levels recorded in 1990 across all sectors. It is worth mentioning that energy consumption per capita in California has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, except for in the residential sector. In 2021, energy consumption in the residential sector surpassed the levels observed in 2019 by 2.2 percent. Despite an increase in energy consumption, the transportation sector in California still remained 8.3 percent below its pre-pandemic level.
Challenge
- While energy consumption in the industrial sector has been declining in recent years, the opposite is true for the residential and the transportation sectors—energy consumption rose by 0.7 percent and 19.3 percent, respectively, from 2020 to 2021. In the transportation sector in particular, energy consumption increased 19.3 percent from 2020 to 2021—the largest increase in any sector as energy consumption and vehicle miles traveled in 2020 were lower than average.
